Snowflake Cane, Step by Step Tutorial

Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 1

Thoroughly condition 3 ounces of white (pearl) polymer clay, preferably Premo or Kato.

Shape the clay into a log, about 2” long.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 2

Prepare your dark blue clay: condition about 1 ounce of clay (use the same brand as your white clay). Set your pasta machine to the third THINNEST setting and use it to roll out the blue clay into a 2”-wide sheet.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 3

Carefully wrap the white log with the blue sheet, making sure that no air is trapped between the two layers of clay.

Trim off any excess of the blue clay.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 4

Roll out the left-over blue clay into a sheet (on your pasta machine, use the same setting as before). Slice it into strips, about 1/2" and 1/4” wide.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 5

Slice the log of clay lengthwise in half.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 6

Cover one half of the log with two 1/2"-wide strips of blue clay, aligning the sides of these strips with the sides of the log.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 7

Use your sculpting tool (I am using a knitting needle) to smooth out the inner sides of the blue strips.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 8

Re-assemble the two halves of the log.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 9

Starting from the center of the log, slice it vertically at least two or three times, placing the cuts at an equal distance from each other.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 10

Repeat for the second side of the log, making sure that the slices on both sides have the same thickness.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 11

Insert 1/4"-wide blue strips on both sides of each cut, smooth the inner sides of the strips with a sculpting tool, and re-assemble the log.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 12

Placing your blade perpendicularly to all previous cuts, slice the re-assembled log in half lengthwise.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 13

Place each half of the log on your working surface, flat side down. Using your fingers, re-shape both halves of the log as shown in the picture (you are forming two triangular prisms now).
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 14

Trim off the sides of each triangular prism.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 15

Slice both re-shaped parts into three equal pieces.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 16

Re-assemble the obtained parts and press them firmly together to obtain the snowflake design. In the center, you can add a thin log made out of white polymer clay.
Polymer clay, snowflake cane, step 17

Reduce the obtained cane to the desired diameter. This is your finished cane.
